The Hero 7 White was introduced by GoPro in September 2018. It belongs to the outdoor and action cams category.

Being a typical action cam the GoPro Hero 7 White is environmentally sealed and features dedicated protection against the elements.

The Hero 7 White's image sensor has an effective resolution of around 10 megapixel. The resolution is somewhat below average but will be sufficient for most purposes. Photos with this resolution can easily be printed to A3 size.

The GoPro does not support recording RAW images. RAW images are stored as they come from the sensor, without any in-camera processing or sharpening. Converting to JPEG or other formats takes place on the computeand involves one extra processing step but will almost always result in superior image quality.

The wide-angle lens with a focal length of 17mm has a largest aperture of F2.8.

The Hero 7 White's shutter speeds range from 1/2000s to 30s.

The highest shutter speed of the GoPro is just 1/2000s. That's no longer state of the art and may cause problems in challenging light conditions.

The Hero 7 White's usable sensitivity ranges from 100 ISO to only 1600 ISO.

The Hero 7 White supports all common metering modes.

The Hero 7 White doesn't feature a built-in flash. That is not unsusual in this camera category.

A flash or a trigger for remote flashes can be attached to the GoPro's hotshoe.

The Hero 7 White features a monitor with a diagonal of 52.00mm (2.0 in.) and a resolution of c. 0.24 megapixel. That rather low resolution is no longer state of the art and will make it difficult to evaluate images on the display.

Unfortunately, the Hero 7 White's monitor is not articulated. That can make it tricky to frame your subject in some situations, e.g. when taking selfies.

The Hero 7 White's monitor can work as a touch screen, just like a smartphone. That can be very useful, for example to pick AF points, but keep in mind that touch screens usually don't work when wearing gloves.

When recording videos with the Hero 7 White, the highest supported resolution is 2560 x 1440 pixel, in other words Full HD Video. 4K videos are not supported by the GoPro.

A connector for an external microphone is missing from the GoPro. A built-in mike will usually record everything in front and to the sides of the camera which is not always what the film maker wants. Internal microphones also tend to record camera sounds like focus beeps.

The Hero 7 White has Wifi connectivity already built-in. Use Wifi to transfer images to a smartphone or computer and to remote control the camera.

Another option to transfer images to the smartphone is Bluetooth (Note: Bluetooth connections will not always transmit images or videos with full resolution.)

USB 3.0 is already supported by the GoPro. USB 3.0 greatly speeds up transferring images and videos to the computer.

What memory cards can be used with the GoPro Hero 7 White?

The Hero 7 White will only accept Micro SD cards. The GoPro does not support SD cards.

With an average image size of 5 megabytes (JPEG, fine) a 32 GByte memory card would hold up to 6400 images.

The Hero 7 White doesn't have a built-in GPS receiver. If you want to add coordinates to your photos, you'll have to do so in 3rd party software like Adobe Lightroom. However, with Wifi built-in, location data can also be added via a connected smartphone.

The Hero 7 White features a built-in stabilizer. With a 1x zoom, that's not necessarily a requirement, but nice to have nonetheless.

If you are into HDRs, the camera won't create those automatically. You will have to manually create image sequences and later assemble those sequnces in third-party software.

The Hero 7 White is environmentally sealed against dust and moisture; a very useful feature when you take the camera places.

The GoPro Hero 7 White works with a GoPro Akku battery. The battery lifetime is a generous 1000 shots. Usually enough for a full day or more.

The battery can be charged over USB while in camera. Very useful, especially on vacation when most people bring a USB charger for their smartphone anyway.
