Z6 vs X1D: The sensors

The Z6 features a Full frame sized sensor, while the X1D uses a Medium format sensor.

Featuring an area of 1441mm² (2.31 sq.in.), the X1D's sensor is somewhat larger that the chip that the Z6 employs at 856mm² (1.37 sq.in.). A larger sensor can produce images of interiors or at night that have less noise and better contrast than photos shot with Full frame sized chips.

The Z6 uses an electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 3.68 megapixel. The magnifcation is c. 0.80x.

The X1D features an electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 2.36 megapixel and a magnification of around 0.75x.

Conclusion: Advantages of the Z6 are built-in automatic sensor cleaning, that the camera is faster and the faster and more accurate auto focus. Additional pros for the Nikon are the larger sensitivity, the better viewfinder and the optical image stabilizer. A nice touch is that the display has a higher resolution, the articulated display and the superior video recording. A recommendation of the Z6 is made easy by that the battery has more stamina, the more compact size.
