For 2019, Motorola released four smartphones with the Moto G7 designation: The vanilla G7, the G7 Play, the G7 Power, and the G7 Plus. Our recommendation is the G7 Power (2nd from left) which brings the largest display, the biggest battery, and the best overall value for money.
Note: If you are in the US, make sure to get the „US Version“ of the phone. This version supports both GSM and CDMA and works with AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and other carriers. If you shop on Amazon, it is this item.
Per Motorola the phones can be extended by up to 512GB. Hence, all four smartphones have a card slot to add external memory. The G7 and its siblings feature a SIM carrier which accepts up two Nano SIMs and has a dedicated slot for a micro SD card:
Besides installing larger apps like games, the extra memory is useful for storing images and videos which can get quite large, especially when recording 4K: As a rule of thumb, FullHD Video uses between 100-200 MB per minute, 4K gets up to 500-800 MB. A single 20 Megapixel JPEG may take up to 10 Megabytes of storage.
In order to store photos and videos on the micro SD card, the camera app requires the card to be formatted as „internal memory“. The respective option is located in Settings > Storage > SD Card > Storage settings.
These days we wouldn’t consider memory cards smaller than 64 GB. Using the ballpark numbers from above this capacity would be sufficient for five hours of Full HD video, 90 minutes of 4K video or about 6.000 JPEGs.
For most users a Class 10 card like the following will be fast enough:

All four G7 models record video in 4K resolution. The Class 10 card recommend above will be fast enough for Full HD recording. However, it is too slow to record proper 4K video and may cause problems when used in othe 4K-capabkle devices like actions cames or drones.
In those situations, a Class 30 (aka. U3 or V30) card is a better choice:
Again, 64 GB is the smallest size we would recommend. When shopping for a card, keep the Moto G7’s maximum capacity of 512 GB in mind. See micro SD cards for 4K video on Amazon.
