Nikon’s popular APS-C (DX) DSLR D3500 has a single card slot on the right side of the camera body:
The slot accepts memory cards in the standard SD Card form factor; insert the card with the cut-out corner facing up and the label facing back, as shown. The fast and expensive (4x) UHS-II cards can be used without issue but the camera won’t profit from the faster cards.
The D3500 has a native resolution of 24 Megapixels. Video can be recorded with up 1.920 x 1.080 at 60p (Full HD).
This yields the following file sizes for photos:
For most scenarios a Class 10 card will be more than fast enough. Class 10 cards will permit video recording up to Full HD and a burst rate of five images per second, that’s right in line with the specs of the Nikon D3500.
As for card size, we wouldn’t go below 64 GB. A card of that capacity will take up to 4.000 JPEG images (FINE) or 2.000 RAW + JPEG (fine) or around 5 hours of Full HD video.
Sample card (SanDisk Ultra):
If you plan to use the card in a 4K capable camera (e.g. Nikon Z6 or Nikon Z50), keep in mind that Class 10 cards like the Ultra are too slow for 4K video and may also slow the camera down with burst rates higher than 5 FPS.
In this scenario we recommend a Class 30 (also sold as „V30“ or „U3“) card like the SanDisk Extreme Pro (pictured in the Nikon above). Class 30 cards are fast enough for 4K video and burst rates of 10 FPS and higher:
The easiest and fastest way to transfer photos and videos to the computer is via USB. The D3500 features a micro USB port which you can connect directly to your PC or Mac. On a PC the camera will show up in the file manager, on a Mac use Applications > Image Capture to access and retrieve the images.
