Nikon’s popular APS-C (DX) DSLRs D5300, D5500 and D5600 have a single card slot on the right side of the camera body:
(Photo shows our D5600 with the SanDisk Extreme Pro recommended below)
The slot accepts memory cards in the standard SD Card form factor; the fast (and rather expensive) UHS-II cards can be used but writing speed or burst rates won’t profit from the faster cards.
All three models have the same resolution (24 Megapixels) and roughly the same file sizes. Recording video is supported with a highest resolution of 1.920 x 1.080 (Full HD). The following data was taken from our D5600.
For most users a Class 10 card will be fast enough. Class 10 cards will permit video recording up to Full HD and a burst rate of five photos per second, right in line with the specs of the D5xxx models.
As for card size, we wouldn’t go below 64 GB. A card of that capacity will take up to 4.000 JPEG images (FINE) or 2.000 RAW + JPEG (fine) or around 5 hours of Full HD video.
Sample card (SanDisk Ultra):
If you plan to use the card in a 4K capable camera (e.g. Nikon Z6 or Nikon Z50), be aware that Class 10 cards are too slow for 4K video and will also slow the camera down with higher burst rates. In this case we would recommend a Class 30 (aka V30 or U3) card like the SanDisk Extreme Pro:
