CIPA have released camera sales figures for January 2019. Shipments took another massive hit and dropped about 25% compared to December 2018:
Likewise, production numbers fell by 17% (volume based) across all camera categories over the past month; 22% when compared to January 2018.
Looking at individual categories (highlighted), we see a reduction of 25% (volume) and 20% (revenue) for compacts and 9% and 11%, respectively, for ILCs:
Splitting ILCs into DSLRs and mirrorless, the former see a decline of 12% (volume) and 18% (revenue) while the latter lose about 5% for both metrics. The gain (7% volume, 36% revenue) compared to January 2018 for mirrorless ILCs is easily explained: Canon and Nikon hadn’t entered the market yet and the most important models (Sony A7 III, Nikon Z6/Z7 und Canon EOS RP) hadn’t been released.
Looking ahead, we don’t see the numbers improving significantly over the coming months. Canon has already stated that they expect the market to decline for two more years before bottoming out.
