About two months after the initial announcement and right in time for Christmas, BlackMagic has released the iPad version of the video editor DaVinci Resolve. The app can be downloaded directly from the App Store on the iPad. The download is free, but some functions are only activated with in-app purchases. Fortunately, these are one-time payments, not subscriptions.
Anyone who knows Resolve as a user will hardly expect that the interface survived the switch to the tablet without major changes. In fact, significant parts of the program have been adapted to multi-touch and pen operation; How well frame-accurate editing works by touch will have to be shown by the first field reports. Many shortcuts from the desktop version still work if you have a corresponding keyboard connected to the iPad, but officially only Apple’s own Magic Keyboard and the folio version are supported.
Some functions, such as editing and exporting 4K video, are only available if the more powerful M1 or M2 processors are available, limiting this features to current iPad Pro models.
Formats supported are H.264, H.265, Apple ProRes and BlackMagic’s own RAW format.
