Shortly after the first product images, reliable specifications of the new Leica Q2 surfaced over the weekend.
The camera features a new full frame sensor with a native resolution of 50 megapixel (47 MP effective). As with the original Leica Q, the sensitivity maxes out at 50.000 ISO. Likewise unchanged is the fixed 28mm F1.7 lens on the front. Leica employs no less than eleven elements in nine groups, three of which are formed aspherical.
The lens features a dedicated aperture ring and offers a shortest focusing distance of just 17cm (7″).
With the new release, Leica significantly bumps the camera’s video capabilities: The Q2 will record 4K video with up to 30 fps and also supports C4K (4.096 x 2.160 px.) with cinematic 24 fps. The camera will record super slo-mo at Full HD resolution with up to 120 fps.
The Leica Q2 brings a single UHS-II compatible slot for SD memory cards.
Mostly unchanged compared to Q and Q-P are the EVF with 3.68 megapixel resolution and the touchscreen on the back (1.04 MP). With regard to the user interface, the camera loses a few control elements and buttons.
Price and availability of the Leica Q2 are currently unknown although we expect the official announcement later this month. The current price for the Leica Q is at around $3.000; as such, the Q is currently the least expensive full frame camera the brand has on offer.
