Today, Nikon introduced the latest addition their Nikkor Z line-up: The new Nikkor Z 14-30mm F4 S will add considerable wide-angle reach to the full-frame cameras Z6 and Z7. At only 500g (1.1lbs.) the lens is fairly light and comes with a 82mm filter thread because Nikon managed to keep the front lens flat. Previous ultra-WA designs have bulging front lenses and usually resort to screw-in filters at the back or filter drawers.
The new lens uses fourteen lenses in twelve groups; four elements are from ED glass, four more are aspheric. Nano Crystal Coat coating is supposed to suppress flares and ghosting. Like the existing lenses, the WA zoom employs a stepper motor for quick and near silent focussing. The click-less control ring on the lens is for manual focussing but can also be configured to set the aperture or exposure compensation.
The lens itself is not stabilized but plays nicely with both cameras’ built-in five axes stabilizer.
The 14-30mm F4 will be available in mid April, the MSRP will be around $1.300 in the US.
Further five lenses are planned for the Z Mount this year, as shown in the roadmap for 2019:
