Yesterday, Nokia officially introduced the brand’s 2019 flagship. Most noticable feature of the Nokia 9 Pureview is the hexagon shaped pattern on the back that houses no less than five cameras.
Nokia again partnered with Zeiss and employs five identical optical setups with 28mm FL (equivalent) and F1.8 each. Two cameras feature a sensor with a traditional Bayer array for color photos, three more are purely monchromatic. Besides enhancing the dynamic range, the additional cameras obtain fine grained depth information that is stored together with the actual imaging data.
The resulting RAW DNGs can be edited on the phone using Adobe’s Lightroom Mobile or Google Photos.
Working in perfect unison, the five 12 MP cameras collect up to 10 times more light than a single smartphone camera color sensor. The results: photos with superb dynamic range that capture detail and texture from both the highlights and shadows, plus incredible depth-of-field and vibrant, truest-to-life color.
Each of the five cameras automatically adopt the optimal settings for various parts of the scene. Then, synced with bespoke algorithms and advanced AI, the cameras shoot simultaneously. Finally, the images are fused into a single HDR photo with texture and detail from both the shadows and the highlights.
Nokia have published a bunch of sample images that illustrate the enourmous dynamic range of around 12 stops:

Smartphone cameras that use the traditional dual camera setup can distinguish ten layers of depth information; the Nokia achieves 1.200 which permits very fine grained control over the focus point in post processing.

Other specs are on last year’s flagship level: Snapdragon 845, 6 GB RAM / 128 GB ROM (not expandable), 5.99″ P-OLED display with 1.440 x 2.880 px., Quick Charge and wireless charging, IP 67 protection, Android One. Drawbacks are the fairly small battery (3.300mAh) and missing headphone jack.
The Nokia 9 Pureview will come to stores in Spring 2019. MSRP is $699,– US.
