Sharp shows 8K MFT camera

Pretty much out of the blue, Sharp surprised CES-visitors by displaying the first 8K-capable camera compatible with the Micro Four Thirds standard:

Sharp 8K Micro Four Thirds Camera CES 2019

Not much is known about what clearly is still a prototype; technical specs are reportedly as follows:

  • Video resolution 8K 30p with HEVC / H.265
  • Stabilizer / IBIS on board
  • Single SD Card slot (8K will require a UHS-II compatible slot)
  • No EVF at least on the prototype, articulated 5″ display
  • Price around $5.000

Short video showing the camera; the lens ist the Olympus 40-150mm, by no means bad glass but it’s resolution might not be on par for 8K:

So far no one has released an MFT sensor to spec – 8K video equates to about 33 megapixel (7.680 x 4.320 px.). Currently, Micro Four Thirds maxes out at around 20 MP with the Lumix G9 and other recent cameras. That’s a fairly small sensor and a fairly high resolution, a combination that will negatively impact the camera’s low light capabilities.

That’s all we know so far; an official presentation should come in the second quarter of 2019.
