Sigma introduces 28mm F1.4 Art

Sigma 24mm F1.8 Art

Sigma today added a new member to their lineup of large aperture Art lenses. The 28mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art is a classical wide angle which will mostly see use in architecture and landscape photogtaphy.

The lens is constructed from seventeen elements in twelve groups, three of which are aspheric, five more are made of low dispersion glass. Sigma’s goal was to minimize chromatic aberrations across the whole field of view (MTF Charts):

Like the other lenses of the DG Art line, the new 28mm features a near silent HSM autofocus drive and uses lots of caskets for protection against dust and water. Additionally, the exposed lens surfaces at the front and the back have special coating that’s water and oil repellant.

All this takes its toll on weight and dimensions: Almost 900 grams (2 lbs.) need to be lugged around; the lens’s body has a diameter of 83mm (3.3″) and a length of 107mm (4.2″). The front filter thread is 77mm.

The large aperture combined with the short focal length makes for interesting perspectives:

Isolating objects is easy because the focal plane is razor thin. The lens features a rounded diaphragm with nine blades for nice background rendering:
